Description

This rare 1840 Japanese world map by Ryukei Tajima presents the entire globe in two hemispheres rendered in a double-circle projection, adorned with soft washes of blue, pink, and ochre on a cream ground. Dense columns of classical Chinese-script annotations frame the hemispheres, reflecting the Edo-period scholarly tradition of adapting Western cartographic knowledge into Japanese woodblock-printed encyclopaedic maps. Celestial diagrams appear along the lower margin, situating Earth within a broader cosmological framework typical of 19th-century East Asian geographical scholarship.
