Description
This elegant hand-colored engraved map depicts the full continent of North America as understood in 1818, with territories rendered in soft washes of pink, green, teal, and gold delineating colonial and national boundaries of the era. Published by Scottish cartographer John Pinkerton, the map captures the continent from the Arctic regions of Canada and Russian America in the north to the Caribbean and Central America in the south, reflecting the geopolitical landscape shortly after the Louisiana Purchase and before much of the American West was formally surveyed. The aged cream paper, fine engraved linework, and decorative cartouche in the lower left give the piece an authoritative antique character suited to a study or library setting.
