Description
This iconic study depicts a nude male figure in two superimposed positions — arms and legs outstretched — simultaneously inscribed within a circle and a square, illustrating the ideal proportions of the human body. Created around 1490 by Leonardo da Vinci, the drawing is accompanied by notes in his characteristic mirror script and is based on the writings of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, who proposed that a well-proportioned man could be inscribed within both geometric forms. Housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy, the Vitruvian Man remains one of the most recognized symbols of the Renaissance synthesis of art, science, and humanist philosophy.
