Description

This unfinished portrait by Viennese Symbolist master Gustav Klimt depicts Baroness Elisabeth Bachofen-Echt — daughter of Klimt's patron August Lederer — standing in a luminous white lace gown against a richly ornamented teal background populated with Chinese figural motifs, reflecting Klimt's lifelong fascination with East Asian decorative arts. The composition is quintessentially Klimt: a realistically rendered face and figure set against a flattened, pattern-saturated ground, with an orange-tiled border anchoring the lower edge. Klimt worked on the canvas between roughly 1914 and 1916 but left it incomplete at his death in 1918, making it one of the most celebrated unfinished works of the Viennese Secession.
