Description

A delicate pencil sketch on warm terracotta paper depicts a standing female figure draped in a flowing, spotted gown, rendered with Klimt's characteristically light, searching line. This is a preparatory study for the celebrated 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' (1907), Klimt's most famous painting, which depicts Adele Bloch-Bauer — a prominent Viennese patron of the arts — enveloped in an elaborate gold-leaf composition now housed at the Neue Galerie in New York City. The sketch's spare, gestural quality offers an intimate glimpse into Klimt's process before the final work's iconic golden splendor.
