Description

This detail from Gustav Klimt's monumental Beethoven Frieze (1902) depicts a golden-armored knight — representing the 'well-armed strong man' — standing resplendent in richly ornamented gold plate, accompanied by allegorical female figures who reach toward him in longing. Two pale, ethereal nude figures gesture yearningly from the left, evoking humanity's plea for happiness. The Beethoven Frieze was created for the 14th Vienna Secession exhibition as a tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and the original work, painted in casein, gold leaf, and semi-precious materials, permanently resides in the Secession Building in Vienna, Austria.
