Description

This detail from Gustav Klimt's monumental Beethoven Frieze (1902) depicts a row of serene, trance-like female figures with closed eyes, dark haloed hair, and raised hands holding small flowers, rendered in ethereal shades of violet, magenta, and pearl white. The rhythmic, decorative composition is characteristic of Klimt's Vienna Secession style, where symbolism and ornamental beauty merge to evoke longing and transcendence. The original frieze was created for the 14th Vienna Secession exhibition as a visual interpretation of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and is permanently housed in the Secession Building in Vienna, Austria.
