Description

This richly decorative close-up depicts two figures locked in an intimate embrace, the woman's pale face resting serenely with closed eyes against a dark-clad partner, surrounded by swirling blue mosaic spirals and geometric patchwork in teal, black, and earth tones. The image is a detail from Gustav Klimt's 'The Fulfillment' (also called 'The Embrace'), one of the celebrated cartoons created for the Stoclet Frieze (1905–1909), a monumental mosaic commissioned for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, Belgium. Klimt's signature fusion of Byzantine ornament, Symbolism, and the Viennese Secession style transforms human tenderness into an almost jewel-like surface of pattern and color.
