Description

This richly symbolic work depicts Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, rendered in Klimt's signature Symbolist style with intricate blue-and-white patterned robes, an ornate headdress, and a serpent coiling around her arm — the snake being the ancient emblem of medicine and healing. The figure gazes directly at the viewer with a cool, enigmatic intensity against a misty gray background filled with shadowy forms. This is a detail from Klimt's large-scale ceiling panel 'Medicine,' originally commissioned in 1894 for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna; the controversial cycle was ultimately rejected for its provocative allegories and was tragically destroyed by fire in 1945.
