Description
This striking detail depicts Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, rendered in Gustav Klimt's signature Symbolist style with richly ornamented gold crown, flowing red robes, and a serpent coiling around her outstretched arm. The work is a detail from Klimt's large-scale ceiling painting 'Medicine,' originally commissioned in 1897 for the University of Vienna's Great Hall — a controversial piece that was ultimately rejected by the university for its frank allegorical content. Hygieia's frontal, commanding gaze and the interplay of decorative gold against muted grey tones exemplify the Vienna Secession movement's blend of fine art and ornamental design.
