Description

This detail from Gustav Klimt's monumental Beethoven Frieze (1902) depicts a row of ethereal female figures — often called the choir of paradise or 'the arts' — with auburn hair, closed eyes, and pale elongated arms delicately holding small flowers. Their serene, trance-like expressions and richly patterned orange-gold robes are characteristic of Klimt's Symbolist style and the Vienna Secession movement. The Beethoven Frieze was created for the 14th Vienna Secession exhibition as a tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and the original fresco-like work is permanently housed in the Secession Building in Vienna, Austria.
