Description

This striking detail depicts Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, rendered in Gustav Klimt's signature Symbolist style with lavish gold ornamentation, a serpent coiling around her arm, and cascading red and gold drapery. The figure forms the foreground detail of Klimt's monumental ceiling panel 'Medicine,' originally painted between 1900–1907 for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna — a commission that sparked fierce controversy for its frank allegorical treatment of the human condition. Rich gold leaf accents, jeweled headdress, and the Rod of Asclepius snake reflect Klimt's celebrated fusion of fine art and decorative craft during the Vienna Secession movement.
