Description
A sweeping, chaotic explosion of color and form fills every corner of this monumental canvas, with swirling lines, arcs, and amorphous shapes colliding in a luminous yellow-gold atmosphere. Composition VII (1913) is widely considered Wassily Kandinsky's greatest masterpiece and a foundational work of abstract art; painted in just four days in November 1913, the enormous 6.5 × 10 foot work integrates themes of Resurrection, the Flood, and the Last Judgment into pure visual music, reflecting Kandinsky's belief that color and form could express spiritual truths independent of representation. Today the painting is housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.
