Description

A snarling tiger crouches low among lush tropical ferns and tangled vegetation beneath a stormy, rain-streaked sky, its striped coat vivid against swirling green foliage and splashes of red-orange blossoms. The dramatic tension of the prowling predator mid-stalk gives the scene a raw, primal energy. This is Henri Rousseau's celebrated 1891 masterwork 'Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!)', now in the collection of the National Gallery in London — one of the first of his iconic jungle paintings that established his unique naïve-art vision of exotic wilderness he never personally visited.
