Description

This woodblock print depicts timber workers sawing a massive plank on a tall diagonal frame in the mountains of Tōtomi Province, a historical region in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji — the unifying motif of Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' — appears in the distant left background, rendered in pale blue against billowing clouds. The composition masterfully uses the diagonal plank to draw the eye across the scene, conveying the industrious daily life of Edo-period Japan against the timeless presence of Fuji.
