Description

This woodblock print depicts groups of pilgrims and climbers ascending the steep volcanic slopes of Mount Fuji, Japan's iconic sacred peak, clad in white robes and round yellow hats as they navigate rocky, cloud-wreathed terrain. A shelter filled with resting figures is visible at upper right, while the distant blue expanse of sky and a hazy shoreline open to the left, conveying the immense scale of the climb. Part of Hokusai's celebrated 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' series, this print reflects the Edo-period tradition of Fuji pilgrimage (fujiko), in which thousands annually ascended the 3,776-meter mountain for spiritual purification.
