Description

This woodblock print depicts Noboto Bay, a shallow tidal inlet on the eastern shore of Tokyo Bay in what is now Chiba Prefecture, Japan, as seen through the towering wooden torii gate of a Shinto shrine. Figures bustle below — some carrying baskets, others bent in labor — against a vast expanse of calm blue water, reed-covered sandbars, and distant hills, with the iconic snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji visible on the horizon. The scene belongs to Hokusai's celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), in which Fuji appears in each composition as a constant, almost mythic presence unifying Japan's landscape.
