Description

This woodblock print depicts Noboto Bay (Noboto no ura), a tidal inlet on the eastern shore of Edo Bay in present-day Chiba Prefecture, Japan, framed by towering torii gates of a Shinto shrine while figures bustle along the shore carrying goods and a kite soars overhead. In the far distance, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji floats serenely above the horizon, a hallmark device of Hokusai's celebrated Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series (c. 1830–1832). The composition balances earthy ochres and greens of the coastal landscape against the expansive blue sky and water, conveying the lively daily rhythms of Edo-period coastal life.
