Description

A lone fisherman stands on a rocky promontory at Kajikazawa, in Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan), pulling taut fishing lines against crashing waves while the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rises serenely in the background. The print belongs to Hokusai's celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), produced around 1831–1832, in which Fuji appears in varied weather and settings across Japan. Rendered almost entirely in shades of Prussian blue — a pigment newly available to Japanese printmakers — the composition balances dynamic wave energy with the mountain's calm, distant presence.
