Description

This classic ukiyo-e woodblock print depicts a busy lumber yard in Honjō, an eastern district of Edo (present-day Tokyo), with workers handling long timber planks and bamboo poles in the foreground while the iconic snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rises serenely in the upper right background. The composition belongs to Hokusai's landmark series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), produced around 1830–1832, in which the artist ingeniously framed Fuji within scenes of everyday Japanese life. The Tatekawa canal area of Honjō was a thriving hub for the timber trade in Edo, and the print captures the vitality of its craftsmen against the enduring presence of Japan's most sacred peak.
