Description
This woodblock print depicts the village of Isawa in Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan) at dawn, with thatched-roof buildings in the foreground bustling with small figures carrying parasols beneath snow-capped rooftops. Mist and clouds fill the middle distance in sweeping bands of lavender and blue, while Mount Fuji — Japan's iconic 3,776-meter stratovolcano — rises serenely above the clouds with its snow-white peak. The composition is from Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,' in which Fuji appears as a constant yet varied presence across different seasons and regions.
