Description

This print depicts a lively scene beneath the eaves of a Japanese merchant's shop, with several figures in traditional kimono engaged in animated activity — some resting, others gesturing or working — while Mount Fuji is faintly visible in the background. The image appears to be a stylized or colorized variant of 'Yoshida at Tōkaidō,' from Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (c. 1830–33); Yoshida (present-day Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture) was a prosperous post town on the historic Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo and Kyoto. The artwork has been rendered with selectively applied color overlays against a predominantly gray palette, giving it a contemporary graphic sensibility while honoring the original ukiyo-e woodblock composition.
