Description

Three samurai warriors gallop on horseback along the banks of the Sumida River near Sekiya Village, a scene from Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (c. 1830–1832). The iconic red-capped Mount Fuji rises serenely in the distance beneath a deep indigo sky, framed by a gnarled pine tree and golden reed marshes that reflect the tranquil river. Sekiya was a post town on the northeastern outskirts of Edo (present-day Tokyo), and Hokusai captures the wide, flat Musashino plain through which the Sumida River meanders before reaching the city.
