Description

A large Japanese sailing vessel — a kitamaebune cargo ship — glides across calm blue-green seas under billowing white sails, its pink-lacquered hull richly detailed with rigging and cargo. This woodblock print is from Hokusai's iconic series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (c. 1831), and depicts the sea route off Kazusa Province (present-day Chiba Prefecture, on the eastern shore of Tokyo Bay), with the distant white peak of Mount Fuji visible on the horizon. The composition conveys both the maritime commerce of Edo-period Japan and Hokusai's masterful use of flat, vivid color and precise line.
