Description

A large flat-bottomed cargo boat loaded with bales of rice dominates the foreground, rendered in warm oranges and earthy tones against a calm blue waterway, with Mount Fuji rising serenely in the upper right distance. This woodblock print depicts Ushibori, a port town in the historic Hitachi Province (present-day Ibaraki Prefecture), set along the shores of Lake Kasumigaura, one of Japan's largest lakes. Part of Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (c. 1831), the composition frames Fuji through the lens of everyday commerce and rural life, showcasing the artist's mastery of the ukiyo-e tradition.
