Description
This iconic woodblock print from Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' depicts fishermen and cargo boats on the calm waters surrounding Tsukudajima, a small island in the Sumida River estuary near Edo (present-day Tokyo). The serene scene features several flat-bottomed vessels carrying workers and goods, while the tree-lined island settlement appears in the middle ground and the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rises majestically on the horizon. Rich indigo blues dominate the composition, capturing the tranquil atmosphere of everyday maritime life in early 19th-century Japan.
