Description

This Japanese woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts lush, full-bloomed peony blossoms rendered in soft gray tones, with a single vividly colored butterfly alighting at the upper right — its orange-and-black wings providing the composition's only warm accent. The work belongs to Hokusai's celebrated 'Large Flowers' series (Ōban-format prints, c. 1833–1834), a landmark suite in ukiyo-e botanical art admired for its bold, close-cropped compositions and refined botanical observation. The artist's red seal and signature appear in the lower left corner, confirming the attribution.
