Description

A lush cascade of fully bloomed peonies rendered in sweeping shades of blue, indigo, and violet fills the composition, with a delicate butterfly poised at the upper right. The fluid, layered brushwork and pale washed background evoke the refined sensibility of Japanese woodblock and ink tradition, giving the piece an ethereal, dreamlike quality. This work is attributed to Katsushika Hokusai, the celebrated Edo-period master renowned for his 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' and his prolific botanical and nature studies.
