Description

This striking woodblock-style print depicts lush, full-bloomed peony blossoms filling the composition, rendered in varying tones of deep indigo and pale blue against a soft blue-grey ground, with a delicate butterfly alighting in the upper right corner. The work is from Hokusai's celebrated large-flower series, part of his broader exploration of botanical subjects during Japan's Edo period, showcasing the refined line work and two-tone blue palette (known as aizuri-e, or indigo printing) that became iconic in Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's artist seal and signature cartouche appear at the lower left, confirming the work's authenticity within his prolific late-period output.
