Description

This ukiyo-e block print, rendered in striking violet and purple tones, depicts a dramatic scene with elegantly robed Japanese figures — a standing woman, a reclining or distressed figure, and an armored retainer — set against a tranquil coastal landscape with Mount Fuji visible in the background. The working title 'Enya' references Enya Hangan, the fictional lord at the center of the classic Chūshingura (Treasury of the Loyal Retainers) narrative, one of the most celebrated stories in Japanese culture depicting the 47 rōnin who avenged their master's forced seppuku. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), best known in the West for 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa,' created numerous prints illustrating theatrical and literary subjects such as this scene.
