Description

A towering, foaming ocean wave dominates the composition as small wooden fishing boats struggle beneath its curling claw-like crest, with the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji visible in the distant background. This iconic woodblock print is from Hokusai's celebrated series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,' published during Japan's Edo period. Mount Fuji, Japan's tallest peak at 3,776 meters, is depicted here in its symbolic role as an enduring, serene counterpoint to the drama of the turbulent Kanagawa waters off the Kanagawa Prefecture coast near modern-day Yokohama.
