Description

This striking woodblock print depicts a lively cherry-blossom viewing scene at Gotenyama in Shinagawa, a celebrated hilltop pleasure ground along the old Tōkaidō highway south of Edo (present-day Tokyo), with Mount Fuji visible in the distant haze. Figures in traditional dress gather beneath bare-branched blossoming trees while rooftops and the shimmering bay fill the middle ground. The image has been rendered in a dramatic monochromatic indigo-violet palette that intensifies its decorative, graphic beauty.
