Description

This striking woodblock-style composition depicts a lively cherry-blossom viewing scene at Gotenyama in Shinagawa, with Mount Fuji visible in the misty distance beyond a calm bay. The cherry trees — here rendered in vivid blue in this stylized reinterpretation — frame elegantly dressed figures celebrating hanami (flower viewing) beneath their canopy. Gotenyama, located in what is now the Shinagawa district of Tokyo, was one of Edo's most celebrated cherry-blossom viewing spots along the old Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo to Kyoto.
