Description

This woodblock print depicts a lively cherry-blossom viewing scene at Goten-yama Hill in Shinagawa, a historic district on the old Tōkaidō road south of Edo (present-day Tokyo), with Mount Fuji visible in the distant haze above the waters of Edo Bay. Crowds of figures in traditional dress celebrate hanami (flower-viewing) beneath dramatically bare and blossoming cherry trees, while rooftops and a wide, luminous sky fill the background. The image has been rendered in a striking monochromatic purple palette, lending a dreamlike, otherworldly quality to Hokusai's characteristic dynamic line work from his celebrated landscape series.
