Description
This striking woodblock print depicts Amida Falls (Amida-ga-taki), a celebrated waterfall in Japan, framed by a dramatic circular opening in dark rock through which swirling blue waves of water cascade dramatically downward. Three robed figures rest and contemplate on a rocky outcrop to the left, surrounded by gnarled pine trees and rolling green hills, lending the scene a meditative serenity. Part of Hokusai's celebrated series 'A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces' (Shokoku taki meguri), this print exemplifies the artist's mastery of dynamic composition and the ukiyo-e tradition of depicting nature's sublime power.
