Description

This woodblock print depicts a tranquil evening scene at Ommayagashi (御厩河岸), a riverside landing on the Sumida River in Edo (present-day Tokyo), where elegantly robed figures gather on a dock beneath weeping willows as small boats glide across a deep indigo waterway. The composition is from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (名所江戸百景, 1856–1858), one of the most iconic collections of ukiyo-e landscape prints ever produced. The Sumida River, which flows through the heart of Tokyo into Tokyo Bay, was a vital commercial and cultural artery of Edo-period Japan, and Ommayagashi was a busy ferry landing serving the city.
