Description

Figures hunched under conical hats and umbrellas hurry across a wide wooden bridge in a driving rainstorm, while a lone boatman poles through the churning river below — vertical rain lines slashing across a steel-blue sky create an immediate, atmospheric sense of urgency. This celebrated woodblock print depicts the Shin-Ōhashi Bridge spanning the Sumida River in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Japan, one of the great bridges of the old capital. Part of Hiroshige's landmark series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858), the composition's bold diagonal and relentless rain are widely credited as a direct influence on Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists including Vincent van Gogh, who made painted copies of it.
