Description

A vivid ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a summer fireworks display over the Sumida River at Ryōgoku Bridge in Edo (present-day Tokyo), with bright chrysanthemum bursts illuminating a deep blue night sky above a crowded scene of wooden boats and spectators on the water. The soaring red trail of a rocket connects earth and sky, drawing the eye upward to the cascading sparks overhead. Ryōgoku Bridge was the site of the famous annual Sumida River fireworks festival (Ryōgoku Kawabiraki), one of Edo's most beloved summer celebrations, and this image is plate 98 from Hiroshige's masterwork series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in 1858.
