Description

This atmospheric woodblock print depicts a nocturnal procession of lantern-lit palanquins and figures along the Nihon Embankment (Nihonzutsumi) — the famous raised causeway leading to the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo (present-day Tokyo). A crescent moon floats above a wide, misty river landscape while a diagonal flock of geese arcs across the deep blue sky, lending the scene a poetic, melancholic mood. Part of Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858), the print captures the iconic earthen embankment that served as the main approach to the licensed quarter of Yoshiwara, one of Edo's most culturally storied destinations.
