Description

This atmospheric woodblock print depicts a moonless New Year's Eve night at Oji, a district in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Japan, where ghostly foxes gather beneath the bare, gnarled branches of the legendary Shozoku Enoki nettle tree, their luminous white forms glowing against the deep indigo fields and dark treeline. According to Edo-period folklore, foxes from across the Kanto region would assemble here on the last night of the year, transforming into human guise before visiting the nearby Oji Inari Shrine — one of the most important Inari fox-deity shrines in the region. The print belongs to Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo hyakkei), masterfully capturing the eerie, magical atmosphere of the scene with a cool nocturnal palette punctuated by the foxes' spectral glow.
