Description

A massive black koi-shaped windsock (koinobori) dominates the foreground, its shimmering scales rendered in bold graphic detail, while behind it the rooftops, bridges, and greenery of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) stretch toward the distant, snow-capped silhouette of Mount Fuji. This woodblock print is plate 65 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858), depicting Suidōbashi (Suido Bridge) and the Surugadai district — a hilly neighborhood in Edo favored by samurai families and associated with the Boys' Festival tradition of flying carp-shaped kites. The bold foreground-to-background composition and vivid mineral pigments are hallmarks of Hiroshige's ukiyo-e mastery.
