Description

This atmospheric woodblock print depicts a rain-soaked evening scene at the Paulownia plantation in Akasaka, Edo (modern-day Tokyo), with mist-shrouded trees receding into a soft grey sky and small figures sheltering along a tree-lined path beside a tranquil pond. Akasaka is a district in the Minato ward of Tokyo, historically known for its gardens and shrines during the Edo period. The print is plate 87 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1859), a landmark of ukiyo-e art renowned for its innovative compositions and expressive use of weather and atmosphere.
