Description

This traditional Japanese woodblock print depicts a tall festival banner (nobori) inscribed with kanji rising before a tranquil waterfront scene at Tsukudajima, a small island in Edo (present-day Tokyo) on the Sumida River. The composition frames distant boats and marshy shores beneath a glowing pink-orange sunset sky, flanked by gnarled pine branches — evoking the festive atmosphere of the Sumiyoshi Shrine festival, one of the great summer celebrations held on Tsukudajima. Part of Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1859), this print exemplifies his mastery of bold foreground framing and atmospheric perspective.
