Description

This woodblock print by Hiroshige depicts Takata no Baba, a historic open ground in Edo (present-day Tokyo) once famous as a horse-riding and archery training ground during the Edo period. A massive full moon dominates the left foreground, dramatically framed by a tall pine tree, while a long straight road lined with pines recedes into the misty blue distance, with small figures gathered at the right edge. The scene belongs to Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in the 1850s, which immortalized iconic locations across the city.
