Description

This vivid ukiyo-e woodblock print depicts a busy harbor view from Takanawa Ushimachi, a coastal district along the shores of Edo Bay (present-day Tokyo Bay) in Japan. In the foreground, a large wooden wheel mechanism and timber beams frame the scene dramatically, while a worker rests below alongside coiled rope. Beyond, dozens of sailing vessels dot the expansive blue bay under a pale sky, capturing the lively maritime commerce of mid-19th century Edo. The print is from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in 1857.
