Description

This striking woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige frames a serene river scene through a large circular window — a classic tondo compositional device — flanked by a blossoming plum branch and a dark architectural screen. The view depicts the Sumida River area near the Suijin Shrine and the Uchigawa Inlet in Edo (present-day Tokyo), with small boats drifting across calm blue waters against a backdrop of green marshlands and a distant mountain at dusk. The print is plate 106 from Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1859), a landmark series of ukiyo-e landscapes that profoundly influenced Western Impressionist artists including Vincent van Gogh.
