Description
This vivid woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the summit of Atagoyama in Shiba, Edo (present-day Tokyo), featuring a large ceremonial paddle or votive offering in the foreground while figures fly kites against a sweeping panoramic view of Edo Bay and the surrounding landscape at dusk. Atagoyama is one of Tokyo's historic hills, long associated with the Atago Shrine and famous for its steep stone staircase known as 'the staircase of success.' The composition masterfully layers bold architectural elements — including a vivid vermilion temple eave — with a serene gradient sky, characteristic of Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series.
