Description

This woodblock print depicts a nocturnal scene on the slope of Aoizaka, just outside the Toranomon Gate in Edo (present-day Tokyo), bathed in deep indigo night tones beneath a crescent moon. Figures in various states of undress carry lanterns and bundles along the winding street, while storks rest at the roadside and the warm glow of a distant dusk silhouettes bare trees — evoking the lively yet mysterious atmosphere of old Edo after dark.
