Description

This iconic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts Saruwaka-machi, the theater district of Edo (present-day Tokyo), alive with townspeople strolling beneath a luminous full moon on a clear night. Rows of shop fronts and theater buildings line the wide boulevard, their lanterns glowing softly against a deep blue twilight sky, capturing the vibrant nocturnal energy of Edo-period urban life. Saruwaka-machi was home to Edo's three great kabuki theaters, and this print is plate 102 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in 1856–1858.
