Description

This woodblock print depicts Suruga-chō, a prosperous merchant street in Edo (present-day Tokyo), lined with the indigo-curtained storefronts of the famous dry-goods shops, bustling with elegantly dressed townsfolk beneath a dramatic pink and blue sky. The composition draws the eye down the vanishing-point perspective of the avenue directly toward the iconic snow-capped summit of Mount Fuji, Japan's most celebrated peak, rising majestically in the distance. This print is plate 8 from Hiroshige's landmark series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in 1856–1858, celebrated for its bold compositions and atmospheric color.
